Bull Heath

Location: Bull Lane, Lenham Heath

Size: 13 acres

Bull Heath is often described as ‘magical’ because it’s lichen/moss carpet makes it a very unusual site. Since purchasing the site we have improved access, coppiced, cleared around the “pond” (yes we know there is no water in it) and installed some benches. Coppicing is important in this site to provide better habitats for birds and insects and to enable the lichen and mosses to flourish. Coppicing needs to be undertaken regularly event, so if you walk through and see trees being cut down, don’t be alarmed it is in the long term benefit to all. We are very grateful to the Kent Wildlife Trust for the management plan they provided for this site and their continued advice. Bull Heath is a Local Wildlife Site.

A number of habitats have developed within this disused sandpit. Bull Heath has two large sandy cliffs, which are colonized by sand martins, burrowing bees and rabbits, an open expanse of rabbit grazed grassland, colonised by a wide variety of lichens, mosses, fine grasses and small herbs, as well as a wooded perimeter, inhabited by warblers, woodpeckers and turtle doves.

The lichen/moss carpet is at it’s best from February to March, but this site is also a lovely place for picnics in the summer, when you can watch the sand martins flying overhead (please take your rubbish home with you!).
